GPA Calculated! Now, do you want to learn more about the calculation process?
As a college or university student, it’s important to understand how to calculate your GPA. When I was in my university age, I was using complex GPA formulas to calculate the GPA. Fortunately, you don’t need to memorize complicated mathematical formulas. Let’s break down the process step by step.
What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a way to measure your academic performance based on your grades in different subjects. Different universities use different methods to calculate GPA. Next, I will explain you guys how to find the GPA for each subject and how to calculate your overall GPA. For example, let’s say you have four subjects with the following grades and credit hours:
- Subject 1: Grade – 70, Credit Hours – 3
- Subject 2: Grade – 70, Credit Hours – 3
- Subject 3: Grade – 70, Credit Hours – 3
- Subject 4: Grade – 70, Credit Hours – 3
Additionally, you have one more subject with the following details:
- Subject 5: Grade – 70, Credit Hours – 2
Now let’s calculate the grade points for each subject. If a grade of 70 corresponds to a grade point of 3, the calculations are as follows:
- Subject 1: 3 * 3 = 9
- Subject 2: 3 * 3 = 9
- Subject 3: 3 * 3 = 9
- Subject 4: 3 * 3 = 9
- Subject 5: 3 * 2 = 6
Adding all the grade points together:
9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 42
Now, let’s calculate the total credit hours:
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 14
To find the GPA, divide the total grade points by the total credit hours:
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credit Hours = 42 / 14 = 3.0
So, your GPA is 3.0.
Types of GPA:
There are following two types of GPA:
- Weighted GPA
- Unweighted GPA
Weighted GPA
The common meaning of “weighted” is something that gets more value or importance. When we say a grade is “weighted,” it means it’s given extra points because the class is harder. So, harder classes can boost your GPA more than easier ones.
Un-Weighted
Now “unweighted GPA” is your regular GPA, with a maximum of 4.0. In this type of system, you get the same points for an A, no matter the class.
Difference between a High School GPA calculator and College GPA calculator?
There is not a huge difference between the high school GPA and college GPA calculation processes. High school GPA calculators use a simple 4.0 grading scale method, while college GPA calculators incorporate credit hours and additional grading factors such as plus and minus grades.
Now let’s talk about the calculation processes for both:
High School GPA Calculator
- Identify Your Grades:
First, identify your grades and assign each grade a point value based on the grading scale 4.0:
- A = 4.0
- B = 3.0
- C = 2.0
- D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
- Add Up the Points:
Now, add the point values for all your grades. - Calculate the Average
Lastly, divide the total points by the number of classes to get the GPA.
College GPA Calculator
- Identify Your Grades and Credit Hours:
Again, assign each grade a point value (similar to high school but including plus/minus variations):
- A = 4.0, A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Note the credit hours for each class.
- Multiply Grade Points by Credit Hours:
Secondly, for each class, multiply the grade points by the number of credit hours.
- Add Up the Results:
Now, sum the total grade points multiplied by credit hours for all classes.
- Calculate Total Credit Hours:
Sum the total credit hours for all classes.
- Calculate the GPA:
Lastly, divide the total grade points by the total credit hours.
How to calculate GPA using Semester GPA Converter?
Now, let’s learn something about GPA calculation using SGPA converter. This GPA converter is also called the College GPA Calculator or High School GPA calculator. It is so simple:
- First of all, select the semester you are in.
- Now add the subjects you are studying in your school or college.
- Add the grade you have earned in each subject you have mentioned.
- Now add the credit hours for each subject.
- Select the type of GPA you want to calculate, e.g. weighted or unweighted.
- Now press the enter button and your GPA for a semester will appear before you in just a few seconds.
How do you calculate GPA manually?
Want to calculate GPA manually? The manual calculation of GPA is not too difficult, but it will take some time. So, calculating GPA manually involves a few steps. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide:
- Understand the GPA Scale
Before you start, familiarize yourself with your school, college or university GPA scale. The common grading scale is out of, 4.0, where an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on. Some schools use a different scale. So, make sure you know the scale your school follows.
- Convert Letter Grades to Grade Points
Now assign numbers to your letter grades. These letter grades are highly based on the GPA scale your school follows. The common grading scale is 4.0 so we are taking it for our calculation.
Letter Grade | Grade Point |
---|---|
A | 4.0 |
A- | 3.7 |
B+ | 3.3 |
B | 3.0 |
B- | 2.7 |
C+ | 2.3 |
C | 2.0 |
C- | 1.7 |
D+ | 1.3 |
D | 1.0 |
D- | 0.7 |
F | 0.0 |
- Assign Grade Points
Now list out the subjects of the current semester. Then gather the corresponding letter grades you received in each. For each class, use the GPA scale to convert the letter grade to grade points.
Class | Letter Grade | Grade Point |
---|---|---|
Subject 1 | A | 4.0 |
Subject 2 | B+ | 3.3 |
Subject 3 | A- | 3.7 |
Subject 4 | B | 3.0 |
Subject 5 | A | 4.0 |
Subject 6 | C | 2.0 |
Subject 7 | B- | 2.7 |
Subject 8 | A | 4.0 |
- Calculate Total Grade Points
Total Grade Points = 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.0 + 2.7 + 4.0 = 26.7
- Calculate GPA
Now it’s time to use the formula of calculating GPA.
GPA = Total Grade Points / Number of Classes.
Here;
Total Grade Points = 26.7
Number of classes = 8
GPA = 26.7 / 8 = 3.3
By following these steps, you can manually calculate your GPA. It might take a bit of time, but it provides a detailed understanding of your academic performance.
GPA Conversion Chart
Here is a common conversion table that converts your average percentage of subjects to GPA. But most importantly, it can vary based on your school, college or university grading scale. I will recommend checking the grading system of your institute. But for a rough idea, this chart may help you.
Percentage | GPA |
---|---|
90-100 | 4.0 |
87-89 | 3.7 |
83-86 | 3.3 |
